ME 270: Design for Manufacturability
This course provided and introduction to design for manufacturability, design for assembly, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. Projects included analysis of different manfuacturing methods, including cutting, casting, forming, shaping, and welding, as well as designing for assembly using snap-fits.
Project Details
The goal of this project was to reverse-engineer a product, and explain and improve the product life cycle using DFM and DFA (Design for Manufacture & Design for Assembly) concepts taught in the course.
I deconstructed a Grindmaster Cecilware coffee shuttle, then created a bill of materials, assembly analysis, and manufacturing cost analysis (using aPriori software); I then generated new design concepts to simplify the manufacturing and assembly processes, as well as encourage recyclability. These concepts included the merging of components, as well as the introduction of snap-fits.
